Celebrate Durango’s Fall Festivals & Events
Autumn is one of Durango’s most dynamic seasons—when culture, heritage, and community take center stage. Here are just a few can’t-miss events happening this fall:
- Durango Arts Month – Each September, Durango transforms into a hub of creativity with gallery openings, workshops, live performances, and more. Whether you’re an art lover or simply curious, this celebration of local talent is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the cultural side of our mountain town. As part of this special month, the Second Avenue District (where The Leland House and Lola’s Place are located) will come alive on September 20-21 with the Durango Autumn Arts Festival. Presented as a fundraiser for the Durango Arts Center—the region’s premier non-profit visual and performing arts organization—the festival showcases fine arts and crafts by makers from across the country, drawing an estimated 8,000 attendees annually.
- Spoketober – With over 300 miles of nearby trails, Durango is a cyclist’s paradise. For the entire month of October, Spoketober celebrates everything bike-related with group rides, contests, and plenty of community fun. (Insider tip: at our sister property, Lola’s Place, we often host Spoketober events—just steps from your suite!).
- Durango Cowboy Gathering – From Oct. 1-4, 2025, step back into the spirit of the Old West. For
over 36 years, cowboys, cowgirls, musicians, poets, and horse enthusiasts have gathered in downtown Durango to celebrate western traditions. From soulful storytelling to horse parades down historic streets, this is a festival rich with heart and heritage. - Durango Open Studio Tour – From Oct. 17-19, 2025, meet local artists where the magic happens—in their studios. This free, self-guided tour provides rare access to the workspaces of Durango’s most talented makers, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their craft and the opportunity to take home original art.
Leaf-Peeping and Outdoor Adventures
Surrounded by the majestic San Juan Mountains, no autumn visit to Durango is complete without ample time spent in the great outdoors. We recommend activities such as:
- Biking or hiking amidst the aspens on trails like Cascade Creek or the Spud Lake Trail.
- Riding the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which departs from a station just steps from The Leland House before winding through canyons ablaze with color.
- Feeling adventurous? Try ziplining through the crisp autumn air and experience the stunning fall foliage from a unique vantage point!
